8/10/2007 : First Formula
Student Meeting For Brunel Masters Motorsport
Although many of us had met
before to discuss the Formula Student project, the start of
October saw the first main meeting with the whole
team and Professor Hua Zhao, our faculty
advisor. Many of us knew what we wanted to do, we selected a
potential chassis to work on, which was the
BMM-3 space frame chassis, and so on, but this meeting changed everything.
O
ne big change
was the ‘addition’ of David Lane, a member of the BR-8 team who just
moved into the MSc programme. He brought a lot of experience from
Brunel Racing and knew how the Brunel system ran, which is a huge
benefit, especially on the powertrain side of the
project.
The meeting itself reassured most of the team , who had met
before, of what had to be done and gave the others a brief idea of
what is required of them. In this meeting, the areas that people
worked in were decided, and negotiations were made. I negotiated
with Villy about our powertrain project areas and in the end we
swapped half of our projects. Team and group leaders were also
decided during that meeting, and again, compromises had to be made
and in the end, 4 group leaders were assigned instead of 2, thus
splitting the work load. The existing 2 positions, Technical Team
Leader and Team Administrator still exist, but the new positions
consist of a Marketing Team Leader and Finance Team Leader.
This meeting also put forward the view to use BR-5, a carbon
fibre monocoque design a made in 2003/04. The advantages of this was
clearly the existin lightweight design, but the complications were
what we didn’t like from the start. The main reason was that the
ability to modify the design and suspension was limited and much
harder with this chassis, but there was a plus of a full re-design
of the rear tubular chassis. David put a very convincing proposal
forward with some contacts that will help us with any modifications.
In the end, we chose the BR-5 carbon fibre monocoque due to its
weight and the fact that the rear can be totally re-designed to our
new requirements.
